This is truly a wearable work of art! This brooch features a beautiful example of pietra dura, which is the art of using inlaid stone to make images. In this case, we have white and blue flowers and foliage - and yes, each flower, leaf and piece of stem is a hand cut piece of hardstone, expertly shaped and perfectly fitted into the onyx background. The amount of skill this would have taken to make just blows my mind!
The setting is a perfectly simple gold bezel, which allows the fabulous pietra dura to shine.
This piece is in great condition, with only minor surface wear to the pietra dura and gold setting. There is a small crack in one of the petals of a blue flower, and some light scratches and scrapes on the surface, but nothing major. Ready to wear!
9ct gold (marked 9ct and Hooper, for the maker, on the back of the setting) - the brooch pin and safety chain are base metal. The safety chain can easily be detached. A bale could also be added so this could be worn as a pendant - please message me to discuss options if you’d be interested in adding a bale.
Measures approx 4cm long by 3.3cm across. Weighs approx 8.6g.
